Vale Travis Harrison

Travis Harrison recently passed away after a long, hard-fought battle with brain cancer. Travis was a linesman who started his transmission apprenticeship approximately 20 years ago in South Australia, and later on moved to Queensland to complete his Distribution Certificate III. During his time on the lines he worked across the east coast of Australia on major projects as well as with a number of contractors throughout the industry. Travis was a hard-working, experienced and well-respected liney who had very strong union principles.

Late last year our power industry delegates worked tirelessly collecting money from their members to raise funds for Travis’ treatments and to show their support and solidarity. This in conjunction with a donation from the ETU’s Distress & Mortality Fund raised just over $21,000.

“Having dealt with Travis on a number of occasions during his time in Victoria, he was always a staunch, passionate member. He always spoke up at union meetings and rallied the troops where required. The brotherhood has lost a good one. RIP brother” said his Organiser, Matt Boyd.

ETU Safety Alert!

This is the third case of brain cancer in the Victorian power industry in the last 2 years. Organiser Matt Boyd spoke with our Secretary Troy Gray about getting an independent expert in the field of working in close proximity to live high voltage wires and power assets to see if there is any correlation between the two. If you or anyone you know has had a similar situation, please contact Matt at:
